Cleanliness
Training involves physically touching our training partners, falling, rolling, and moving around the tatami (mats). Therefore, the most important piece of etiquette is personal hygiene. Please ensure you are generally clean before practice, especially the hands and feet.
Arrive on Time
Please arrive 10-15 minutes early in order to change and prepare for class, as we start promptly at the class times indicated on the schedule. If your schedule does not allow you to be on time, be courteous when entering to not disturb others. If you arrive late - please change and stretch before you enter the tatami.
Attire
Please wear keikogi if you own one and if not, sweat pants (or yoga pants) and a t-shirt is fine while trialing classes. There are facilities for changing at the dojo.
Reishiki (禮式) refers to etiquette within the dojo. Below is a small list of basic etiquette practiced at Meiwakan Aikido. Some Reishiki is to be discovered through observation, but for more detailed explanations please ask a senior student or the instructor before or after class.
When entering or exiting the dojo, we bow towards the kamiza (front of the room), as a sign of respect.
Tatami are swept before and after class.
Keikogi are kept clean and belts are tied correctly. When in doubt, ask a senior student.
When entering or exiting the tatami, we bow towards the kamiza, in seiza if capable.
During demonstration, students sit in seiza (or cross-legged if needed) to observe.
When choosing a partner to practice with, both bow at each other as a sign of acknowledgment and respect.
In general, when practicing empty hand techniques each partner repeats a technique four times.
When practicing in pairs or in groups, the most senior student performs the technique first in order to further demonstrate.
We do not practice in total silence, but in general talking is kept to a minimum during class.
Do not seek to stop another student from practicing in order explain or critique.
